Ellery is a student at Lakemore School for Boys and the son of a widowed architect. He is shy and withdrawn. His experience being institutionalized taught him to politely keep others at a distance. Ellery enjoys drawing quite a lot, but lately can only seem to draw the tall, ominous man he sees in his nightmares. He is fixated on asking Benedetta out, but intentionally procrastinates out of paranoia that she will not see him for who he is. Ellery has an unfortunate habit of pushing sharp objects into his skin.
Callisto is the disgraced former prince of a realm beyond Ellery’s world. He was human once, but willfully became a lich to attain eternal unlife. He’s a sadist who becomes enamored with Ellery after spying his practice confession meant for no one. Determined to tamper in events so that they can finally meet, he first appears before Ellery in a sexual nightmare. After getting a taste of Ellery’s fear, Callisto is hooked. The lich continues to torment Ellery, forging an indelible bond with the boy. Callisto also has a hidden masochistic tendency, finding physical pain wildly thrilling.
Benedetta is a young gardener who tends the grounds of both Sanewell and Lakemore Schools. Her mother sent her to Sanewell when she was a child, then both of her parents passed away unexpectedly, leaving her without a guardianship. She was adopted by the institution out of pity. Benedetta welcomed a distressed Ellery to Sanewell with a freshly picked daffodil. Ellery dried the flower in a heavy textbook to preserve the way she made him feel that day.
Stephan is a student at Lakemore Academy and one of Ellery’s roommates. A straight-A student, he is a kindhearted young man and a good influence on Ellery since he enrolled at Lakemore. He and Jean wish that Ellery would open up to them more. Both feel estranged by Ellery’s secrecy and need for privacy.
Jean is a student at Lakemore Academy and one of Ellery’s roommates. He is a bit of a slacker, but gets along fine. He’s a very good listener and friend.
Kundura is a hardened soldier from Phaidis, a country neighboring Callisto’s castle keep. He is a father of two. He adheres to his duties with unflinching calm. His coolness serves as a good foil for Slugate’s fiery temper.
Kundura had the cruel misfortune to be captured, tortured, and transformed into an undead thrall by Callisto. He now works for the lich and is tasked with a special mission from his new Lord and Master: “deflower and kill” Ellery Firth so that his soul will become raw transmigration material.
Slugate is a General from Phaidis commanding armies at the behest of the Head Councilwoman. He enters Callisto’s territory, Zosas, to parlay terms of punishment for Callisto’s treasonous military acts.
Daniel is a student at Lakemore. He’s sent to the Perch probationary summer camp alongside Ellery. Daniel becomes focused on bullying Ellery once he notices how friendless and strange he is.
Damian is a student at Lakemore, and Daniel’s older brother. He comes with Daniel to Perch summer camp. He has a movement disorder which causes his arms to shake. He is overprotective of his younger brother. He and Daniel are delinquents flunking Lakemore. He sees himself as having nothing much to lose and has a bitter personality.
Phillip Garon is a School Administrator. He helps Ellery gain admittance to Lakemore and keeps his former life a secret. Mr. Garon means to be helpful. Once Callisto begins to appear, plunging Ellery’s life into maddening unreality, Mr. Garon’s avuncular maxims and encouragements no longer help.
Lars Firth is Ellery’s father. He is an architect who became widowed in his mid thirties. As a single father, he tried to hold onto the phantom of his lost wife in his only child.
Richie is a student at Lakemore who was sent to Perch summer camp with Ellery, Daniel, and Damian. He is another one of Ellery’s bullies.
Roger Muller is a camp counselor and bus driver. He has a fiery temper.
Mr. Easton is a School Administrator with an interest in fishing.
